Waste plant faces EC probe

The European Commission has asked the Government for more details of the contract extension on the proposed Newhaven waste-to-energy plant, following a complaint that it might infringe procurement rules.

The complaint was made by Lewes MP Norman Baker, who opposes the plant promoted by East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council. The commission has agreed to investigate his complaint that a £35m contract extension should have been put out to tender.

A statement from Baker that the commission had ‘upheld’ his complaint angered the two councils. They reject this and point out that the commission had only issued a letter of formal notice, the first of three possible stages of proceedings, and they are supplying the Government with the information to respond.
