Waste of energy for locals

Residents in rural areas of Cumbria are carrying their household waste up to half-a-mile for collection, following changes to the refuse service run by Copeland Borough Council.

Wagons are no longer travelling up unmade or private roads, in order to avoid damage to vehicles and the possibility of other accidents.

A spokesman for Copeland council said: ‘Large bins have been sited at the end of the private roads so residents can carry their waste to the bins in plastic bags, rather than taking their wheelie bins up and down the tracks on collection days.’
