Waste: Two shortlisted for Cheshire PFI deal

Viridor Waste Management, and a joint venture between United Utilities and Interserve, have been selected from five candidates for the 25-year contract to treat up to 200,000t of waste a year.

The county already recycles around 47% of household waste –just 3% short of its 2020 target.

Viridor proposes treating the waste at a centrally-located mechanical biological treatment plant. The facility utilises technology to recover further recyclable materials and generate high-quality solid fuel.

United Utilities/Interserve are proposing a proven ‘gasification’ solution which would transform waste previously bound for landfill sites into energy and aggregates for the building industry. The Government awarded Cheshire £40M in PFI credits to help subsidise costs. Operations are due to start in April 2013.
