Waste: London borough residents face compulsory recycling

Recycling will be compulsory for all homes in green box recycling-collection areas from 4 August, Brent council has announced. Residents of the London borough will be fined up to £1,000 if they do not recycle. Compulsory recycling requires anyone with access to the green box service to recycle paper, glass, metals, plastic bottles-only, textiles, shoes, batteries and engine oil. The council is urging anyone without a green box to order one now. Other London councils – such as Barnet – had already introduced compulsory recycling, and seen their recycling rates soar, Brent said. Brent council leader, Cllr Paul Lorber, added: ‘Two-thirds of our daily rubbish can be recycled. ‘If you are among the 80% of households served by the green box-collection system, and don’t recycle, then I urge you to start as soon as possible.’
