Waste: Earth provides perfect environment to accommodate compost

Bristol City Council has awarded a 20-year contract to New Earth Solutions to build an in-vessel composting plant to handle the city’s food, garden and cardboard waste.

At present, Bristol’s organic recyclable waste is transported by road to New Earth Solutions’ Wimborne, Dorset, facility – a round trip of 235 lorry miles. A new local facility will mean 30,000t of annual waste can be delivered by the collection vehicles directly to the site. Located within five miles of Bristol, the plant is expected to open in 2010.

ompost from the facility would be produced to PAS 100 standard, for use as a soil improver for agricultural and horticultural purposes.

Cllr Mark Bradshaw, Bristol’s executive member for access and environment, said: ‘This major procurement decision will secure one of the most advanced treatment facilities available. The decision was made after the strong commitment to weekly recycling demonstrated by a growing number of Bristol’s residents.’ Bristol’s recycling rate has recently doubled to around 37%, making it the highest-performing major UK city.
