War against capital’s high-polluting vehicles steps into second gear

Camden London Borough Council is set to introduce anti-gas-guzzler parking as early as this summer, after approving the proposal this week.
The council believes the majority of residents will end up paying less for their parking permits under the scheme.
The plan is along the same lines as London borough Richmond, which previously announced plans to hit drivers of high-polluting vehicles in the pocket while offering discounts to drivers of environmentally-friendly engines and free annual residents’ parking permits for electric vehicles.
A spokeswoman said the measures would come into force from May and then take the following 12 months to come into full effect.
The council also aims to bring in free short-stay parking in pay-and-display bays for residents with electric vehicles, and plans trials of a number of on-street re-charging points for electric vehicles.
