Walsall gives planners the V sign and approves huge hoarding

Walsall Football Club has been given the go ahead to build the largest permanent advertising sign on any European motorway.

The local council granted permission for a pair of posters – 30m and 35m across and 23m high – to be built in a V-shape in the club’s car park, just 35m from the M6.

The sign, located at junction 9, will be visible to 200,000 vehicles each day. The football club argued it would not effect road safety because drivers would not have to face sideways to see it. The council also said the sign would ‘have a generally-neutral effect on road safety on the M6’.

However, Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council approved the proposal, despite the planning committee recommending it refuse permission due to road safety concerns on nearby Brockhurst Crescent.
