Wales gets single-minded over charges for plastic carrier bags

The Welsh Assembly Government has announced plans to introduce a charge on single-use plastic bags.

Environment minister, Jane Davidson, launched a consultation on the proposals at the annual Welsh Litter summit in Cardiff on Monday. The assembly is seeking views on what type of bags should be included, which retailers should charge for bags, how much the charge should be, and how the scheme should be administered and enforced.

Supermarket members of the British Retail Consortium have already agreed to reduce the amount of single-use carrier bags they give out, but Davidson said she wanted ‘to make more of a difference in Wales’.

‘I want to look at how we can further reduce the amount of single-use carrier bags, and how we can encourage more people to reuse bags,’ she said.
