Wakefield gets tough with landfill site operator

A controversial landfill site on the outskirts of Wakefield is to be better policed by local authority officers, its council cabinet decided this week.

Wakefield MDC wants to have more involvement in trying to solve problems which have been plaguing the Welbeck landfill site.

Local residents claim Welbeck Waste Management, which operates the site, has breached its licence on numerous occasions, recently failing to manage gas emissions from the site and allowing what was thought to be red diesel to enter the nearby River Calder. But, despite repeated complaints to the Environment Agency by local residents, no prosecutions have taken place.

The council, which says the EA accepts the owners have breached the licence but nothing serious enough to take legal action, now intends to adopt a more hands-on approach, taking action itself against the site operator, if the terms of the lease are not met.

Corporate director for regeneration, culture and sport, Andy Wallhead, said regular reports would be made to councillors on concerns expressed by local residents, and the council intended to take enforcement action where necessary.
