Visitors get the VIP treatment – with no traffic

London mayor Ken Livingstone  has announced a traffic-free day in one of the capital’s most popular and congested shopping areas.
It will be the largest-ever traffic-free day on 2 December, and will see Oxford Street and Regent Street closed to vehicles for a day.
But, the mayor’s office this week said stories about the scheme becoming permanent were not true.
The event follows the success of a similar drive last summer aimed at encouraging more people to come into the area after the 7/7 terrorists attacks.
The day will be entitled Very Important Pedestrians, or VIP, and organised by Transport. Livingstone, said: ‘London needs the West End as the world’s greatest shopping destination. It is a magnet for visitors.
‘This is even more important as London builds towards the Olympics.’
