Visibility for drivers 'can safely be reduced'

Fresh research suggests that forward visibility for drivers could safely be reduced to as little as 22m on urban road links.

Modelling work for the WSP Group-led manual for streets project also indicates that reducing forward visibility from 110m to 20m would reduce average speeds by 20mph because drivers would be more careful. But the study - for the replacement guide to the Design Bulletin 32 - stresses that junctions need to be safe for those drivers travelling up to 6mph faster than the average.
The draft of the manual also proposes replacing road safety audits with new quality audits and road hierarchies with streets defined by both their 'place' and 'movement' functions.
