Villagers open a dialect with motorists in effort to cut speeds

The distinctive vernacular of Norfolk is being used to grab the attention of drivers and encourage them to ‘slow you down’ while travelling through the village of Wiveton.

Frustrated residents from the village, near Cromer, have taken an unconventional step by erecting the three signs.

The winding 60mph road through the village, between the holiday resorts of Blakeney and Holt, is narrow and twists before a sharp bend near the pub and church, where there have been regular accidents.

The parish council did not want to spoil the picturesque village with conventional road signs, so it decided to use a touch of humour to get the point across. Local language campaigners have praised the move as supporting the county’s vernacular heritage while putting across a serious road safety message.
