Village revamp under way

Durham County Council begins a £106,000 scheme to transform the heart of the village of Witton Gilbert this week.
The work, expected to take nine weeks, includes replacing worn out tarmac and broken pavement flags with concrete flags, setts and conservation kerbs along almost 140m of the thoroughfare.
There will also be new cast-iron railings, bollards to prevent parking in front of the Glendenning Arms, and repointing of walls, where necessary.
A partnership of the county council, City of Durham Council  and Witton Gilbert Parish Council is funding the scheme.
