Viaduct restorers prove a perfect match for their Victorian forebears

More than 300,000 bricks are being used to restore the 125 year-old Harringworth Viaduct in Northamptonshire.
The existing bricks on the 0.75-mile viaduct are being replaced with Staffordshire Blue 73mm engineering bricks, which match the existing brickwork aesthetically – and technically. The bricks are being supplied by Sedgley-based firm, Baggeridge.
Extending across a valley of the river Welland in Rutland, Harringworth Viaduct is one of the UK’s largest to date, and has been hailed as a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.
A spokesman for Baggeridge said: ‘With its long, straight top, and perfectly-formed arches, this viaduct is a visually-captivating feature on the landscape. Therefore, it was crucial that the right brick was chosen to blend in harmoniously with the surrounding countryside, yet would be hard wearing and durable.’
