Viaduct opening closes Gap for M6’s northbound traffic

Traffic has started using the new Mossband Viaduct, which will carry the new M6 over the West Coast Main Line.

The viaduct is a key link in the 5.8-mile M6 Carlisle to Guards Mill extension, through the Cumberland Gap. With the viaduct now open, northbound traffic is using the hard shoulder and lane one.

Within the next few weeks, southbound traffic will also be allowed to use the new viaduct. Once the new motorway is opened to traffic later this year, the 40-year-old existing viaduct will be demolished. The viaduct is the second of two major structures to open to traffic on the new road. The bridge over the River Esk opened to traffic earlier this year.

David Brindle, Highways Agency project manger, said: ‘This is another big step towards the completion of this key scheme which, when finished, will mean drivers can travel entirely by motorway from the south coast of England and London to Glasgow.’
