Variable toll idea for Tamar

Tolls on the Tamar Bridge could vary according to time of day or vehicle occupancy, transport bosses have revealed.

Motorists and key stakeholders are being consulted on plans to increase tolls by 50% by the end of next year, following a maintenance holiday since the widening and strengthening of the cross-border bridge in 2001.

But the consultation also invites opinions on the future toll charge, offering options, including: time of day; day of week; vehicle occupancy; and vehicle carbon emissions.

In 2009, the cash car toll will rise from £1 to £1.50 and the discounted toll will rise from 50p to 75p. The bridge is joint-owned by Plymouth City Council and Cornwall County Council.
