Vandals set for a lesson

Headteachers in South Wales could soon receive bus-shelter statistics, in an effort to cut the cost of vandalism. Maintaining 200 bus shelters cost the Vale of Glamorgan council about £50,000 in 2008-09.

Roughly 40% of that cost resulted from vandalism and graffiti, said an officers’ report for councillors. One bus shelter in Barry had graffiti removed 10 times during the year.

Councillors suggested ‘a copy of the report be forwarded to all headteachers in order to apprise pupils of the issues of vandalism’.

They also said incidents of vandalism should be advertised, to raise public awareness.
