Barnsley MBC has awarded VHE a £15M contract for the construction of the Cudworth and West Green bypass. The long-awaited scheme will reduce the amount of traffic, especially heavy goods vehicles, using the A628 through Cudworth, and improve access to local employment sites.
The 18-month programme starts on 10 November, and includes the construction of 5.2km of new single carriageway. The work also involves creating five roundabouts, a road bridge and a rail bridge over the new road, three underpasses, nine box culverts for water flow storage, major drainage works, streetlighting and signage.
As well as being the main contractor for the scheme, VHE, one of the specialist engineering arms of Renew, will also be responsible for the design of the drainage, structures and surfacing. The total project cost of £21.2M is being funded by £20.2M from the Department of Transport and the remainder by Barnsley MBC.
