Utility rules off the ground

Long-awaited new powers enabling councils to control works by utilities will come into effect ‘early next year’, the Department for Transport has announced.

The latest timetable to implement the Traffic Management Act 2004 follows months of delay. The regulations were laid before Parliament on Wednesday.

‘We want councils and utility companies to work together to reduce disruption,’ said new transport minister, Rosie Winterton. ‘These regulations will help authorities plan ahead, ensure the works don’t take longer than necessary, and give new powers to allow them to issue fines where necessary.’
