Utilities' costly legacy for Edinburgh

Edinburgh City Council needs to spend £70M on its highways maintenance backlog, according to a report leaked to the local press.

The news – confirmed by the council – came despite a four-fold increase in spending on highways.

The council said most of the work was a result of poor road reinstatements by utility companies, which carried out 85% of roadworks in the city.

A spokeswoman said: ‘We do our utmost to ensure that pavements and roads are in the best-possible condition for pedestrians and drivers at all times.’

The performance of the city’s roads department had greatly improved recently, and 98.5 % of priority defects were fixed within three working days – compared with just 70.7% in 2005/06.
