Upgrade starts on vital Welsh link

Street works lasting 12 months and costing £3m to upgrade a stretch of the A470 in Conwy in Wales have started.

The project, on a 1.2-mile (2km) length of the road, comes as the Freight Transport Association (FTA) calls for better links between the north and south of the principality.

Stephen Kelly, FTA head of policy for the Midlands, Wales and South West, said: ‘It is well documented in Wales that north-south links through the heart of the country are of a poor quality, and that improvements need to be made to routes such as the A470 and A483. If such improvements were undertaken, this would remove the need for Welsh operators to use the congested motorways in England, such as the M5 and M6.’

The road improvements will take place near the Snowdonia National Park, and there are concerns that traffic might build up during the summer as tourists visit the area.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Assembly said the work would bring the road up to current standards, and she apologised for any inconvenience. ‘This investment will upgrade the existing single carriageway and provide a dedicated route for pedestrians and cyclists,’ she said.
