Ukip councillor suspended after calling for 'benefits driving ban'

A Ukip hopeful has been suspended from standing as a candidate for the party at the next election after calling for benefit claimants to be prevented from driving.

Campaign material from Leicestershire CC's Cllr Lynton Yates - Ukip’s former general election candidate for Charnwood, Leicestershire - suggested that six million cars could be removed from the roads ‘if benefit claimants were not driving’.

The leaflet read: ‘Why do they have the privilege to spend the tax payers' [emphasis not added] hard earned money on a car when those in work are struggling to keep their own car on the road? These people should really catch a bus!’

It went on to add: ‘As much as I applaud cycling as a form of exercise and past-time [sic] the already congested roads cannot cope with both bus lanes AND cyclists. Cycles should go back to the pavements yet give priority to pedestrians.’

A Ukip spokesman told Transport Network: 'Lynton Yates views do not represent UKIP policy. He has apologised for any offence caused and has been suspended as a candidate.'
