UK’s first reward scheme for recovering waste unveiled

Windsor and Maidenhead Borough Council has launched trials of the UK’s first scheme to reward householders for recycling.

The project will involve weighing the recycling materials produced by participating households in the collection lorry.

Participants will accumulate points with Recyclebank, which can then be redeemed at certain businesses for goods or services, or used to make donations to national and local charities. ‘The pilot gives us an excellent opportunity to test a system which rewards residents and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill,’ said lead member for sustainability, Liam Maxwell.

‘It also supports our local economy by promoting borough shops and businesses, alongside big international names such as Marks & Spencer and Legoland.’ The borough’s recycling rate already stands at 37%, and it says it wants to improve on that without introducing any kind of penalty system.

The council will work with Veolia Environmental and Recyclebank to implement the scheme, starting with 2,800 residents’ green waste service. In September, the second phase will extend that to general recycling which includes paper, plastic bottles and cans in a co-mingled system. The scheme involves scannable tags in wheeled bins which identify the household for point allocation.
