UK commuters facing ever-longer journeys

New figures show that commutes are now taking longer than ever, with more and more workers travelling for more than an hour a day.

The figures, gathered by the TUC to coincide with national Commute Smart Week, show an increase of more than 22% in the amount of people commuting for longer than on hour a day since 1996.

The biggest jumps occurred in Wales and Northern Ireland. Some 1.3M Londoners spend at least an hour a day on the road, train or Tube to get to work, and workers across the UK have the second-longest commutes in the EU.

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, a government-backed body with members including Transport for London and British Chambers of Commerce, said: ‘If everyone travelled one day a week outside peak hours, commuters during peak hours would drop by 20%, or if everyone worked just one day every other week from home, overall commuting would drop by 10%.’
