Tyne has come for tunnel operators to raise tolls

Tolls will rise on the Tyne Tunnel in the new year, with further increases set for 2012, when the second vehicle tunnel opens.

The Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority announced that tolls would eventually rise on both tunnels to £1.60 for cars – currently £1.10 – and £3.20 for HGVs – currently £1.50 – from 1 January 2014. Car tolls will rise to £1.20 in the new year, and to £1.40 in 2012, while HGV tolls will remain unchanged until 2012, when they will rise to £2.

Work is expected to start on the second vehicle tunnel next spring, with completion of the whole New Tyne Crossing project – which includes the refurbishments of the existing vehicle tunnel – set for 2011.

TWPTA vice chair, Cllr Tom Hanson, said: ‘I am delighted the authority has been able to achieve one of its key objectives, namely, to keep the toll as low as possible so the Tyne Tunnels do not present a financial barrier to those seeking work.’
