Tunnel vision spares Bradford city centre from being overwhelmed

 

Flooding in Bradford city centre was averted last week by ‘forward-thinking investment in drainage capacity,’ according to the council.

Tony Poole, principal drainage engineer at Bradford Council, claimed that without a tunnel to divert the Bradford Beck watercourse away from the city centre, ‘it is probable that we would have faced the flooding that affected neighbouring areas’. This was based on the sheer volume of water entering the tunnel’s inlet (pictured). But Poole acknowledged that underground drainage capacity ‘would never be the only solution’, backing consultant MWH’s call for flood pathways and storage areas to accommodate the 80% of stormwater typically conveyed along the surface.
