Trend-setting Camden follows fashion for 20mph speed limits

London Borough of Camden and Transport for London are pressing ahead with a plan to slow traffic on Camden High Street to 20mph by re-phasing the busy thoroughfare’s traffic signals.

Signals on the one-way street would allow traffic travelling at 20mph to flow smoothly, but would force vehicles at higher speeds to keep stopping under the scheme to be implemented ‘by early 2009’. Work to improve the streetscene by reducing the width of the carriageway will start in February.

TfL is, at London mayor Boris Johnson’s request, re-phasing the capital’s 6,000 signals to smooth traffic flows – while meeting the minimum criteria for pedestrian phases.
