Tree surgeon aid helps keep county’s roads in trim

A tree-cutting double-decker bus is being launched by West Sussex County Council to keep the county free of overhanging branches.

A tree surgeon, using a saw, will work from the top of the open-top bus as it drives slowly along the road. The tree-lopping operator and an assistant will have a buzzer, which can be used to signal to the driver to stop while branches are cut back.
A major advantage of the bus is it will help keep traffic moving because it will be easy to overtake. At present, the council has to introduce traffic management measures for such work.

Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, the council’s outgoing cabinet member for highways, said: ‘This is going to save a great deal of time and cost, as well as allowing this vital work to be carried out with the minimum of disruption to motorists.’
