Transport committee chair dies, aged 77

Gwyneth Dunwoody, chair of the transport select committee and the longest-serving female Member of Parliament, has died at the age of 77.

The veteran Labour MP was a formidable politician, and a renowned champion of backbench rights. MP for Crewe and Nantwich since 1974, she died peacefully last Thursday after a short illness.

She was chair of the transport select
committee since 1997, surviving an attempt by Labour whips to remove her in July 2001 after the Commons staged a rebellion. • See full obituary on page 10.
