Transport chief will make space

London’s transport commissioner, Peter Hendy, has promised the freight industry he will look into the creation of spaces for loading and unloading in bus lanes. The freight industry has long attacked bus lanes for blocking delivery routes, claiming that they are already hampered by lack of places for them to stop and unload. Hendy, speaking at a freight summit in the capital, promised to consider the idea of loading spaces, but ruled out throwing open bus lanes to lorries, a move being considered in other cities. Hendy said: ‘I’m not keen on freight deliveries using bus lanes to get around London. We have a problem at the moment with the now-legitimate mini-cabs using them.’
