Transport: Welsh seaside resort waters down traffic ban

A scheme to ban traffic from the Welsh seaside tourist resort of Tenby has been watered down. Pembrokeshire County Council has decided that residents and businesses in the walled town area will be allowed unrestricted access through a permit scheme in the ban’s fifth year. The scheme has also been shortened, from eight to six weeks. The changes follow concerns expressed at a public inquiry held into the county’s plan to make the ban permanent, after four temporary orders. The county has now, again, made an experimental order. The ban is enforced with two automatic number plate-recognition cameras, similar to those used for London’s congestion-charging scheme.
