Transport: Urban policy hits the street

 
The European Commission last week, as promised, issued a wide-ranging policy paper on urban transport policy, although it fell short of the formal Green Paper which had been expected. The document signalled a series of policy initiatives over the next three years, which included a commission review of EU road transport services and a strategy for improving public transport security next year. The much-vaunted Green Paper would be issued next year. Transport commissioner, Jacques Barrot, pledged to build on ‘very beneficial’ EU initiatives in the transport sphere (Surveyor, 22 June).
