Transport: Manchester’s innovative bid

If the Government accepts Greater Manchester’s Transport Innovation Fund bid, a referendum will be held in Bolton on implementing congestion charging, the council has pledged. Political parties are unanimous in their support for a referendum, but a council spokesman stressed that any vote on congestion charging would come at the end of a long and drawn out public consultation. There is pressure within Greater Manchester for other councils to hold a referendum of their own to test public support for road charging.
