London is the best city in the world for public transport according to an international survey of tourists made by TripAdvisor.
Commenting on the results, mayor Ken Livingstone said: ‘This poll is further evidence that the public respond positively to pro-public transport policies. Any major city that has to deliver a world-class public transport system faces challenges, especially in a city like London which saw many years of chronic underinvestment, but real progress is being made.
‘Over the last six years, London’s public transport has seen significant improvements after decades of decline. It now has better bus services combined with reduced congestion, smartcard ticketing and a growth in cycling.’
Overseas visitors to London are now able to buy and receive Transport for London’s electronic Oyster travel cards before they arrive in the UK from VisitBritain’s online shops at www.visitbritaindirect.com
Initially, the cards will be on sale in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain, Portugal and the US, followed by other online shops in March next year.
