Traffic volumes are on the rise in at least 20 rural counties

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has highlighted that there has been growth in traffic volume of 30% or more in 16 county councils and 40% in a further five.

The CPRE highlighted the figures as part of its campaign to convince ministers at the Department for Transport to revise regional funding advice submissions that it claimed represented ‘bulldozing as usual’.

Ralph Smyth, CPRE’s senior transport campaigner, urged ‘a dramatic increase in the proportion of sustainable transport schemes,’ given the need to cut carbon emissions. Spending on road building ranges from 45% in Yorkshire & Humber to ‘over 80%’ in the South East of England.
