Traffic management: ‘Sat navs’ raise fears

The problem caused by the routeing of traffic down inappropriate routes by satellite navigation devices has been raised by senior county officials with the Department for Transport.
The County Surveyors’ Society and Institution of Highways and Transportation have both sounded the alarm over the issue. There are concerns ‘sat navs’ could undermine local authority traffic managers’ strategies for keeping traffic flowing by encouraging drivers to not follow fixed or variable signs.
‘How do you manage traffic when people could just be using their sat navs to go where they please?’ asked Ruth Bridger of the IHT network and operations panel and AA Motoring Trust.
The CSS has raised the issue with the DfT and discussions are ongoing, Surveyor understands.
