Traffic levels motor ahead

 
Traffic levels rose by seven billion vehicle kilometres between 2005 and 2006, sending the UK over the 500bn a year mark for the first time.

Car traffic, up 12% in 10 years, accounts for almost 80% of motor traffic, with the biggest increase over the last 10 years belonging to light vans – up 39%. Bicycle use went up 5% last year.

The Department for Transport Road Statistics 2006 report also showed 28% of traffic was recorded on rural A roads, 22% on urban minor roads, 20% on motorways, 16% on urban A roads, and 14% on minor rural roads.
