Traffic-calming move after residents get the hump

Islington LBC has installed a number of verticle traffic calming measures to prevent cyclists from speeding, following complaints from residents.

The council’s housing arm, Homes for Islington (HfI), introduced the ‘humps’ on Douglas Road, which was a popular route with cyclists trying to avoid heavy traffic.

A HfI spokesman said: ‘The estate tenants and the residents’ association wanted the ramps, following issues with speeding cyclists on this narrow path which is shared by pedestrians and cyclists. If it does not work, we will review it with them.’

London Assembly member, Brian Coleman, dismissed the move as a waste of money. ‘This is another example of the speed fascists who exist in local authorities across the country.

Road humps are an abomination that contribute to slowing traffic and adding to pollution, and can often impede the emergency services. In a city which suffers from congestion, we should be freeing up traffic on our road, not slowing it down.’

A spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association said: ‘It’s vital in shared spaces such as Douglas Road that cyclists be aware that their speed can intimidate, but it seems like these speed bumps may create more problems than they solve.’
