Traffex 2015: New 20mph zone solution showcased

A new technique for 20mph zone marking combined with traffic calming measures will be showcased at Traffex this week.

Unveiled by the Hitex International Group, the new TexPrint Roundel system has already received praise following an extensive pilot project in Coventry and has now been successfully adopted as part of traffic engineering projects across the UK.

Featuring a coloured, decorative high friction thermoplastic surface treatment, the material used in the solution can create a speed table as well as provide an inlaid reflectorised road marking to form a 20mph speed roundel- combining two traffic calming measures in one engineering solution.

Chris Young, senior project manager, Coventry City Council: ‘We have used the TexPrint products throughout the City Centre in Coventry, and found the material to be durable but also achieves the aesthetics we were after for our high quality public realm schemes.

‘The flexibility of this product enabled us to provide intricate paving details, such as cobbled sett interpretations, in areas where there are high volumes of large vehicles where the previous traditional sett details were becoming maintenance issues.

‘We have found L&R Roadlines to be very competitive on tenders, flexible on timescales and the quality of work is very high. I’m sure we will continue to work with L&R Roadlines and recommend to others.’

The reflective thermoplastic marking is highly durable with a hardwearing formulation and enhanced skid resistance. The solution also reduces street clutter and requires no previous excavation of the existing surface.

With 20mph zones increasingly popular, Hitex highlights that the majority are self-enforcing and using a number of different traffic calming measures in combination can be more effective than signed-only 20mph limits.

‘Of these measures, vertical deflections such as plateau’s (or speed tables) have been shown to be the most successful,’ Hitex representatives said.

Traffex and Parkex returns to Hall 5 at the NEC Birmingham on the 21 - 23 April, 2015.
