Touching idea from council

Manchester City Council is piloting rotating cones at pedestrian crossings, to help the visually-impaired people cross the road.

The addition of a new style of cone to the base of the push-button box, which rotates when the steady green man is showing, gives a tactile signal that it is safe to cross.

Cllr Richard Cowell, Manchester’s executive member for environment, said: ‘The rotating cones will help pedestrians who have vision and hearing impairments, and may find it difficult to hear the audible signs on crossing where there is a lot of noise.’
