Tories get carried over bag ambition

A charge for single-use carrier bags in Wales should fund improvements for walkers and cyclists, say the Conservatives.

The Welsh Assembly Government proposes to introduce the charge at the end of 2010.

Nick Bourne, the Tories’ leader in Wales, said a Welsh Conservative Government would use the bag charge to channel an additional £4m a year towards improving cycling and walking infrastructure.

‘It is intended that this sum increase in future, as resources allow. That’s £16m over the next assembly term, which could double with match-funding from Europe.’ He pledged improved facilities for bikes on trains and at stations. The existing transport budget would be used to ensure ‘where feasible’ that a footway was provided at every location where a trunk road passed through a community.
