Tonnes of reasons to use recycled materials for repairs

Edinburgh City Council plans to use recycled material to repair roads across the city.
The council is currently using 95% recycled materials to reconstruct the setted surface of Thirlestane Road, claiming this job alone would save thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
It is now set to ask the Scottish Executive to approve plans to establish a joint venture company so the system can be used more widely. If agreed, the council will work in partnership with Abertay University and Proficio Technology to develop the use of recycled materials and other sustainable initiatives.
Councillor Bob Cairns, executive member for environment and streetscape, said: ‘Cutting the amount of waste being send to landfill and reducing harmful emissions produced by roadworks obviously benefits the environment. This practice is also good value for money.’
The Department for Trade and Industry has allocated initial funding of £250,000 to the joint venture. This sustainable research and development will also be transferable to other highways authorities across Scotland.
