Devon County Council has won consent to erect innovative maximum speed reminder panels at rural accident blackspots. The panels show speed limits against silhouettes of an HGV, a car towing a caravan, and a car on its own.
They will warn drivers of faster-moving vehicles to be patient when stuck behind slower ones. As the panels are not official road signs, the county had to gain planning permission from Mid-Devon District Council.
Meanwhile, the DfT has turned down Norfolk County Council’s plans for new ‘green band’ national speed signs at exits from rural communities. The replacement for the conventional black band sign would have reminded motorists they were on minor country roads, and should drive accordingly.
In market town public perception tests, images of the proposed signs failed to gain the necessary level of recognition. A DfT spokeswoman told Surveyor, however, that the department is working with the county on alternative solutions.
