Time for EU ‘to talk urban’

A ~European Union~ wide debate on the future of urban transport policy has been announced by EU transport commissioner, Jacques Barrot.

Speaking in Paris, Barrot promised to issue a Green Paper asking local authorities how the EU should intervene to improve urban mobility. The paper will also call for advice on harmonising rules affecting urban transport, including public procurement. Barrot said initiatives such as the Galileo satellite and the recent agreement on public transport tendering had ‘shown that European harmonisation can be very beneficial, without overly restricting the diversity of European cultures and local administration’.
