Three queue up to bring relief to one of country’s busiest roads

Three consortia will compete to upgrade an 18km stretch of the A80, one of Scotland’s busiest roads.
Connect M80, Highway Management (Scotland), and M80 Link have submitted bids for a £150M contract to upgrade the A80 motorway between Stepps and Haggs, to begin this year. The project aims to improve road safety and reduce congestion, particularly during peak hours.
Ainslie McLaughlin, Transport Scotland’s M80 project director, said: ‘The A80 is an essential part of the trunk road network in central Scotland and one of the most heavily used. I am pleased that delivery of this upgrade is moving forward. It is a vital project for business growth.’
Connect Roads is owned by Balfour Beatty Group; Highway Management (Scotland) comprises Bilfinger Berger, John Graham (Dromore) and Northstone; and M80 Link comprises Galliford Try and Sir Robert McAlpine.
Construction is expected to start in 2008, with completion planned for 2011.
