Three major centres shortlisted for ‘cycling city’ status

Manchester, Leicester and Greater Bristol have been shortlisted to become England’s first cycling city.

A further 16 towns have been shortlisted to become the next 10 cycling towns, with the final announcement expected in June. The 11 new towns and city will share £47M of funding for the new Cycling England programme, which forms part of the £140M funding for cycling announced by transport secretary, Ruth Kelly, last year.

The shortlisted towns are Blackpool, Cambridge, Chester, Colchester, Coventry City Area, Leighton – Linslade, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Shrewsbury, Southampton, Southend, Southport & Ainsdale, Stoke-on-Trent, Weston-super-Mare, Woking and York.

The existing cycling towns are Aylesbury, Brighton & Hove, Darlington, Derby, Exeter, and Lancaster with Morecambe.
