Three in good company after sustainable travel praise

Transport minister, Gillian Merron, has congratulated Darlington, Peterborough and Worcester for their efforts in boosting sustainable travel.
Speaking at the Sustainable Travel Town Conference in Worcester last week, she highlighted the towns’ success in increasing cycling, walking and use of public transport.
The Department for Transport set up the sustainable travel towns project in 2004 to allow the three towns to see the results of a sustained programme of smarter choices. All three towns have seen a significant increase in walking, public transport and cycling trips.
In Darlington, for example, cycling trips increased by 79%, and Worcester recorded a 22% rise in public transport trips. The towns used a variety of measures to achieve the results, including a technique called ‘individualised travel marketing’, which involved a team consulting with residents on how their local travel experience could be improved.
Merron said: ‘These results show that simple things such as giving information about public transport, starting car share schemes and encouraging people to walk and cycle more can have startling results. I hope this trend will continue, and that more local authorities will learn from these towns’ example.’
