Those on foot get the Upper hand

A new walking and cycling route which follows the line of a disused railway track through the Upper Lea Valley was opened this week.

Local councils and Sustrans worked in partnership to deliver the 7.2km-route from Luton to Harpenden, which is considered a more convenient alternative to the busy Lower Harpenden Road.

The Upper Lea Valley Greenway follows the old Luton, Dunstable and Welwyn railway line, and forms part of the national cycle network route 6, which will eventually connect London to Keswick in Cumbria.

Cllr Don Worlding, portfolio holder for transportation at Luton Borough Council, said: ‘This is welcome as it will improve the safety for the growing number of local people who prefer two wheels to four. It brings a number of health benefits, and also reduces the impact on climate change and congestion.’
