Third Way to greater prosperity

Somerset Highways has started preliminary work this week on a new route aimed at slashing congestion, while helping regeneration in Taunton.
The road is part of combined scheme called the Third Way, which features improvement works to roads around the town at a total estimated cost of £28M – funded by the Department for Transport.
Engineers began work on the Northern Inner Distributor Road by conducting exploratory investigations along the route, which should create access to substantial areas of brownfield development land, while also relieving traffic congestion, according to the council.
Work is expected to take about two weeks to complete the drilling of boreholes and excavation of trial pits at strategic points.
The investigations will be used to establish ground conditions, check for contamination, and determine the direction of any underground water table.
