Thin material wears well, according to latest data

The average service-life of thin asphalt surfacings is 13-14 years, according to a TRL study for the Highways Agency.

The finding shows the materials, introduced in the UK from the early 1990s to meet skid-resistance requirements, had a much longer life than the eight years first assumed. Annual monitoring of thin surfacing was undertaken over two years at 133 sites to collect data into the material’s performance, following a previous four years of information.

The results ‘show that thin surfacing systems can routinely be constructed successfully to provide a safe surface with adequate skid resistance’. There was no clear difference in the durability for any category of thin surfacing, whether the aggregate used was 0/10mm or 0/14mm. There was ‘insufficient data’ on whether using 0/6mm would influence durability.
